Training is on tonight. The groundsman expects the pitch to start freezing at 9pm, so just use your common sense. Big games this weekend so get yourselves down there.

WHC Alumnus Scores Last-Minute Goal to Win Australian Hockey League
2010/11 Men's 1s player, Sam Pike, scored a 69th minute wonder-goal to secure the Gold Medal for the Western Australia Thundersticks in the Grand Final of the Australian Hockey League in Sydney on Saturday. Pikey had already scored earlier in the game, but it was his bullet of a dragflick into the top corner of the net that gave the WA Thundersticks a crucial and ultimately match-winning 4-3 lead over the New South Wales Waratahs with only seconds to spare. Pikey was also awarded the coveted Man of the Match award. Well done Pikey from everyone at WHC. As Trid Woodhouse, former WHC Director of Hockey and current WA Thundersticks coach described it, "that puppy was moving!". But don't take our word for it, click on the link below and enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdM5BVlfdQg
Ladies 1s and Ladies Vets Bring Home the Trophies
Wimbledon Ladies had a successful finals day on Saturday 16 April at Tonbridge School. The Ladies 1s beat Tulse Hill and Dulwich 2-1 in the EHB Trophy and the Ladies Vets won the National Over 40s competition.
Ladies 1s and 1as Combined Success
The performance from the 1s was a club effort as nine of the regular 1s squad were unavailable, so Wimbledon fielded a Cup Squad of 1s and 1as players, player/coached by Sarah Forbes and captained by Natalie Bown. The team gave a gutsy performance and won 2-1 in a tense and exciting final match. THD were the only team in the league Wimbledon had not beaten this season so the victory was even sweeter. Goals came in penalty corner play from Jane Clarke and Linsday Morrison. Promotionand a Trophy show that the 1s are definitely the Club’s team of the season.
Ladies Vets Win Gold
Not to be out done, the Vets team had qualified for the finals by coming through the Surrey and the South rounds of this competition. Having played Woking in both of the earlier roundsand a pool match on Saturday they had to beat them one last time in the final. A score line of 1-0 meant they went home with the gold medals and the rumour of playing in Europe next season!
Wimbledon Recognised by London League
The London Hockey League held its annual awards evening earlier this week and Wimbledon was well represented. Along with the Men’s 4s and Vets 2s each receiving prizes for their strong league performances, the Club was ranked 4th overall in the London Hockey League Club Of The Year award. A great achievement amongst so many strong clubs. In other good news, the Higgins Group confirmed that they will be extending their sponsorship of the London League for another three years, endorsing the continued strength of the league. WHC 4s’ captain, Shaun Lazarow, who attended the event and collected an award on behalf of his team, commented “I had been told that Justin Bieber would be presenting the awards this evening and, although I’m obviously disappointed he couldn’t make it, it was great to see so many London teams represented here tonight.”
Wimbledon connections at England Hockey
England Hockey recently held their Annual General Meeting and two Non-Executive places were up for grabs, which were both won by Wimbledon connected candidates in a fiercely fought contest.
Ben Rea, Wimbledon Men’s President since 1990 and a significant contributor to England Hockey since his appointment to the old HA Council in 1995, was reelected as a Non-Executive, a position he has held since 2005.
Katy Roberts became a Non-Executive Director for the first time. Katy was a Wimbledon junior and represented the Club from 1990 to 1995 and gained 41 England and GB caps as well as attending the Beijing Olympics.
Congratulations to you both.
